2016 versus 2017 vehicles: the differences

The fall season always sees a small increase in new vehicle sales as consumers finally have a bit more time than they did this summer, and the weather outside is more appropriate for being inside than out. If you are looking to replace your current vehicle, you may notice that you have two choices, even for one model: a 2016 vehicle, or a 2017 model-year option.

Here are a few elements to consider when deciding between a 2016 and a 2017 model-year vehicle.

Financial considerations

The 2016 model will likely be more affordable, in part because there will be more advantageous financing plans on the 2016 vehicle, and the dealer will be more willing to negotiate.

Trims and versions

On the other hand, if the 2017 model is a complete redesign, there will likely be more features and equipment, but even if it isn’t a refresh, there may be trim differences between the 2016 and 2017. The key is knowing which equipment you want and then seeing on which trim it is offered.

Resale value

There may be better incentives and financing plans on the 2016 model, but its resale value will be lower down the road, even if you buy it when 2017 models are already in dealerships. That’s because the perception will be that the vehicle is older, even with the same mileage.
