Mazda is far from that. Well, maybe not entirely sane; let’s just say they like taking risks. The MX-5 Miata was a calculated risk nearly 30 years ago and look, it has become the best-selling roadster of all time. Granted, the CX-9 will not garner the same level of praise but what it has to offer is worth a few minutes of your time.
The biggest piece of news related to the new CX-9 is the fact that its engine, the only one available, in a turbocharged 4-cylinder. The possible folly of this decision stems from the fact that, for example, Toyota has not yet killed the V6 in its all-new 2018 Camry. Mazda’s done that, but in a 3-row, 68-meter long, 4-billion lbs. truck. And I’m here to tell you that it works brilliantly.
I’ve logged nearly 3,000 km at the helm of the new CX-9 and the more I drive it, the more I appreciate the 2.5-liter’s 310 lb-ft of torque. From a standstill, it’ll smoke all minivans and most equivalent CUVs, especially if you opt for AWD, which you really should.
The big question however, is what kind of fuel consumption can I expect with this vehicle. Well, it’s quite decent, to say the least. I’ve managed just under 11L/100km and this, in the middle of winter, and summer, and with passengers and gear onboard.
What’s more, the CX-9’s loaded with technology, as it should. Its best trick is that it feels smaller than its outer dimensions suggest. Oh, and the cabin is exceptionally put together with lovely materials and great fit and finish.
