You are about to buy your first car. Maybe you just got your driver’s license, or it may just be that this is the first time you need a vehicle. Whatever the reason, this is an important moment, but since the investment will be major, it is better to have a plan in place.
New or pre-owned vehicle?
That’s the first question that must be asked. First, be aware that it is not only a question of budget. There are many affordable new vehicles which are within the reach of most wallets. Another advantage of new vehicles, they can be leased for two, three or four years, which may be advantageous especially when we are young and we know our needs will change.
That said, a pre-owned vehicle will probably have more equipment and features, and be more luxurious, than a similarly-priced new vehicle. If we turn to the pre-owned vehicle market, we must remember to thoroughly inspect every vehicle that interest us, and depending on how long you plan on keeping your vehicle, maybe add an extended warranty to the sales contract.
Knowing your needs and budget
This is actually the first step, and the most important one. There are a lot of vehicles that are available to you on the market, regardless of your needs. You have to have an idea of your needs and your budget before embarking on the search for your first car, otherwise you risk getting lost. Do you do a lot of sports? Then you will need space. Do you live in the city? A small vehicle that you can easily park anywhere might be a good idea. Once you have a general idea of what you need, the next step is to establish how much you can pay monthly.
Why monthly? Because unless you are able to pay for the car in full at the time of purchase, you will probably be financing or leasing your next vehicle, and you need to know what kind of monthly payment you can afford. Also remember that there will be a lot of extra fees that come into play every month like gas, parking, and insurance.
