The 2017 BMW 5 Series has earned the IIHS’s award for Top Safety Pick +. Earning good and superior ratings on accident prevention systems and headlights, the BMW 5 Series was presented this award for its performance in five different crash tests. The long list of security and performance updates including Dynamic Damper Control with Adaptive Mode and Integral Active Steering, BMW’s intelligent all-wheel drive system, Advanced Driver Assistant Systems and Parking Assistance Systems to name a few are all features that promote BMW’s commitment to safety.

Today the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named the 2017 BMW 5 Series a “Top Safety Pick +”, continuing the company’s long-standing commitment to offering class-leading safety. The seventh generation BMW 5 Series qualified for the “TSP+” thanks to its performance in five different crash tests – small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints. Receiving the Institute’s highest rating, for an optional front crash prevention system with ‘Superior’ rating, as well as the ‘Good’ rating for headlights.
The latest generation BMW 5 Series is praised by the IIHS for its body and structure design, boosting its performance in the small overlap front crash test. Results from the test indicate that the driver space is well maintained with only 5 inches of maximum intrusion at the footrest, showing a low risk of any significant injuries in a real-world crash of the same severity. Additionally, the 5 Series available Frontal Collision Warning with either City Collision Mitigation or with Extended Collision Mitigation earn “Superior” ratings in front crash prevention, both avoiding collisions during testing at 19 km/hour and 40 km/hour.
All in all, the 2017 BMW 5 Series builds on the success of the previous generation by incorporating a roomier interior, greater efficiency and technology on the forefront of innovation. The 5 Series has been entirely newly developed allowing for a significant weight reduction of up to 100 kgs. State of the art chassis systems which include Dynamic Damper Control with Adaptive Mode and Integral Active Steering, BMW’s intelligent all-wheel drive system, Advanced Driver Assistant Systems and Parking Assistance Systems. High-level of standard safety features include BMW Assist eCall, BMW TeleService, Dynamic Stability Control, Brake Dry Assist, Cornering Brake Control and Dynamic Traction Control. Optional features such as Blind Spot Detection, Daytime Pedestrian Protection, Lane Departure Warning, Speed Limit Info, Cross-traffic alert, Active Cruise Control w/Stop & Go, Active Lane Keeping Assistant w/side collision avoidance, Traffic Jam Assistant, and Evasion Aid are also available. The BMW 5 Series is the most innovative 5 Series to date clearing the way towards semi-automated driving.
