Active safety: when your car prevents an accident

Modern cars are safer than ever. New materials make for stiffer structures, and there are now more airbags than ever in modern vehicles not to mention more impact zones and smarter engineering. No question, you are very well protected in the event of an accident, but now modern cars offer something more: active safety systems which help prevent an accident from ever occurring.

Active safety systems

“Active safety systems are designed to monitor the road and make sure other vehicles are not too close, or they make sure that the driver is aware of what is happening around him or her. By taking control of the steering wheel, brakes or simply by sending out an audible signal, active safety systems prevent accidents” says a sales representative at Morrey Nissan of Coquitlam.

There are a host of available active safety systems. These are usually optional. The most common is forward collision alert which will warn you when the vehicle ahead of you stops suddenly or slows down quickly. Some vehicles can even apply the brakes automatically to prevent a collision. Active cruise control will help keep a specified distance between you and the other vehicle ahead of you on the highway. Rear cross traffic alert serves to warn you when you are backing up and another vehicle is approaching quickly.

Other features include blind spot monitoring which will warn you when another vehicle is approaching your blind side, or lane keep assist which can warn you if you are about to swerve into the other lane, or even take control of the steering wheel to keep you in the middle of the lane.

Other active features include automatic parking which, although not necessarily a safety feature per se, will certainly make your life easier when the time comes to park in a crowded environment.
