The right time to put on your winter tires

If you ever tried driving on a snowy road in winter with all-season tires (or worst, summer tires), then you know that they are not the optimal solution to preserving the handling and safety of your vehicle in winter. Although not required by law everywhere in Canada, winter tires should be installed on your vehicle before the first snowfall. The question then becomes, when is it a good time to install these tires on your vehicle?

Normally, you should aim to have your winter tires installed on your vehicle before we switch back to normal time or winter time. This year, that will happen on November 6th, which, in actuality, is a little bit late.

That’s because the key indicator regarding when your winter tires should be installed is not necessarily a date, but the weather report. Indeed, when the temperature outside drops below seven degrees, your summer tires or even some all-season tires begin to lose their effectiveness as they harden and begin to not grip as well.

“Normally, the beginning of October is when you should start thinking about installing your winter tires on your vehicle, and you probably don’t want to put it off for too long. Tire centers and dealerships tend to fill up with appointments at this time of year, so the sooner you call, the better” says a service technician at Bruce GM Middleton.

So, the answer to when you should install your winter tires is… right about now.
