TECHNO: the 2019 Infiniti QX50 will get the new VC-T variable compression engine

Unveiled last year, Infiniti’s Variable Compression CV-T engine will be officially introduced to the market under the hood of the upcoming 2019 Infiniti QX50.

Unique in its ability to vary its compression ratio, the VC-T engine (or VC-Turbo) from the Japanese manufacturer promises vast improvements in fuel consumption that do not come at the expense of performance.

More specifically, the QX50’s VC-T engine delivers 268 horsepower and 288 lb-ft of torque, and can reach 60 mph in one second less than the QX50’s direct rival, but its fuel consumption is reduced by 27 percent. The VC-T system is able to vary the compression ratio by automatically adjusting the height that the piston can reach in the cylinder.

The approach is unique, but the result will be replicated by the recently announced Mazda SKYACTIV-X engine. The latter, however, will use a different system to vary the compression ratio.
